Hyacinthe de Bougainville

Hyacinthe Yves Philippe Potentien,
Baron de Bougainville 1781-1846.

A son of the more famous Louis-Antoine (1729-1811), and the slightly older contemporary of Dumont d'Urville, de Bougainville served as a midshipman on Baudin's expedition to Australia, 1800-1802. Later, he led a circumnavigation of the world from 1824 to 1826 (his father was leader of the first French naval expedition to do so, 1766-1769). Our prints are from the Atlas to the Journal de la Navigation Autour du Globe de la Frégate la Thétis et de la Corvette l'Espérance, pendant les Années 1824, 1825 et 1826.
